Mio Digiwalker C720T GPS / Sat Nav : Navigate by photos!

Mio Digiwalker C720T GPS Image LinkThe Mio Digiwalker C720t is Mio's flagship GPS unit at the moment. I was fortunate to have one for the last 2 weeks and it's been a delight to use this feature-packed gadget. Some of the bells and whistles include a built-in 2megapixel still and video camera, 4.3 inch screen, bluetooth handsfree for mobiles and music.

One of the surprising functions was the inbuilt business card scanner! It allows you to take a photo of the card then translates the image to text. Gnarly dude!

Last weekend I saw the new Navman S series at one of the local shopping centres and was able to compare their top model with the Mio Digiwalker C720T GPS Unit. I would have to say that I like the Mio's split display better than Navman's especially since you had to manually trigger the latter.

The 't' stands for the traffic monitoring functionality that's ready to go once the system goes live in Australia in the next couple of months.

It's RRP is $699 which is a reasonable price for one of the best GPS units on the market.

Great work Mio!

Copilot Live 7 : Now in Australia!

Copilot 7 Live has hit our shores. I've trumpeted about my joys about previous versions and Copilot 7 Live looks to continue to impress already scooping PDA Essentials Best SatNav Software for 2007.

We should be selling Travroute CoPilot 7 GPS software in a couple of weeks.

Travroute CoPilot 7 GPS Australia Press Release:

Melbourne, Australia - December 1st, 2007 - Travroute Australia unveils its latest instalment in the award-winning CoPilot line with Version 7 for mobile phones and PDAs. Supporting Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices, CoPilot Live 7 redefines mobile satellite navigation with its simple and intuitive menus, clearer 2D/3D map views, and compelling mobile data services.

Version 7 also touts a fully customizable user interface which allows mobile operators, handset manufacturers, and everyday individuals to adjust colors, styles, and features to suit their brand requirements or personal taste. CoPilot Live 7 is designed to make navigation on a phone as easy to use as a Personal Navigation device (PND). Entering an exact destination is simple with redesigned step-by-step address entry, finger-touch buttons, predictive address matching, and on-screen set-up wizards. Large-buttoned menus make frequently used features quickly accessible and decrease the amount of user error.

CoPilot Live 7's redesigned 2D and 3D map views enable drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians to see their exact location and where they are going clearly and easily. Customers can choose from a variety of standard road colour schemes or create their own personalised skins. As with all CoPilot navigation solutions, driver safety is the top priority. By default, the map shows a turn or junction, progressively zooming-in automatically before returning to the non-distracting safety screen once the turn is completed.

CoPilot Live 7's spoken turn-by-turn instructions are clearer than ever before thanks to its new Text- to-Speech voice commands, with detailed instructions pronounced naturally in 13 different languages both on Windows Mobile powered Pocket PCs and Smartphones. Driving anywhere becomes as simple as driving in your home town. With an ever changing national road network, today's maps need to keep up with burgeoning city growth and change. Version 7 incorporates over 12.5 million addresses and over 1,000,000 km's of roads in Australia. Also, new extended lane information to accurately reflect their correct lane whilst driving.

CoPilot Live 7's powerful new desktop management companion CoPilot Central enables customers to fully manage their trips and preferences from the comfort of their desktop. Personal color schemes, routes, trips and downloadable Points-of-Interest databases are just a fraction of what this great managing tool can do. With mapping, trip planning, and automatic software upgrades at the user's fingertips, Central greatly enhances the CoPilot user experience.

CoPilot Live 7 is a fully connected navigation system that utilizes a mobile phone's connectivity to the mobile internet to deliver real-time navigation based services and enable interaction with others when on the move. It is now possible to send a tracking invitation directly to a Microsoft Outlook contact from within CoPilot, enabling the recipient to view your location in real time, send messages and even new destinations. Andrew McGregor, Director of Mobility Solutions for Travroute Australia said, "CoPilot Live 7 is a truly customizable GPS navigation system. We can now provide drivers, cyclists and pedestrians with the same experience on a phone as a Personal Navigation Device or in-dash sat nav system. Real-time, location-specific services such as location tracking provide a sense of security previously available only to commercial enterprises. Now mobile phones are just as effective for navigation as they are for communication."

Mio C220 GPS Review : Great GPS at very reasonable price

Mio C220 GPS Car NavigationMio sent me one of their MIO c220 GPS units to review just before I left for a family weekend in Adelaide. Strange place, never visited before - perfect timing.

Dedicated GPS Go!
I've never used a dedicated GPS unit before; have always used GPS on my pocketPC with a GPS receiver. It was a nice change not having to install a new GPS app, load maps then pair my pocketPC with a new GPS receiver. With the Mio c220 it was basically charge and go.

Because there are no other applications running the device, the Mio c220 runs much smoother than having GPS on a pocketPC. Maps adjust quicker and animations are much more fluid. I remember back in the day when delays on PocketPC GPS meant you missed crucial turns - not with the MIO c220.

So Easy to Use
One of the best things about the Mio c220 GPS was its ease of use. The only thing I looked up in the instruction manual was how to change the device clock. After this everything else was very intuitive. I was able to quickly specify destinations and start driving.

Important note: the very first time I used it, it took around 1-2mins to establish a position. So make sure you give the unit time to determine your location if you want to start zooming around.

The touch screen buttons are nice a big for easy address input and it's nice how it intuitively reduces the number of results based on the more letters you type.

Also like how it switches to night display based on the device clock, where the screen uses inverted colors so it's less glary and more kinder to the eyes in the dark.

Comes with Everything: MIO c220 Packaged Accessories
Once you buy the Mio c220 you won't need anything else to start 'gpsing'. It comes
with a decent and easy-to-install suction car mount, car charger, AC adapter and of
course instruction manual. Just charge, mount it, switch it on, put in your
destination and start driving.

Whether you've had other GPS units in the past or looking for a new navigation
device, the MIO c220 is a fantastic device and I highly recommend it.

iBlue PS-737 GPS Receiver, CoPilot 6 and iMate JasJam - Works!

If you're anything like me, you'll enjoy that sigh of relief after spending a couple of hundred of dollars in gadgetry and finding that it actually works.

On Friday I received my iBlue PS-737 GPS Receiver, hoping that it would work with CoPilot 6 which I have installed on my trusty iMate JasJam. Setup was easy, just made sure that Bluetooth was switched on, paired the iBlue PS-737 GPS receiver, then also paired it up inside the CoPilot 6 app on my Jasjam. In no time, with the aid of the satellites in the heavens, it was telling me to head straight then turn left with the route set to "home".

Some personal comments about the iBlue PS-737 GPS receiver: it's tiny so less likely to be noticed by passing-by-car-thieves, takes a Nokia mobile phone battery, power efficient and considerably cheaper than GPS receivers with the same attributes.

For anyone contemplating a GPS solution for their JasJam or Dopod 838 (same machines) I can personally say that the Travroute CoPilot 6 and iBlue PS-737 GPS receiver make a great combo.

For those who want a slighter cheaper solution, Darrell in the office is using Route 66 GPS software instead of Travroute CoPilot 6 with his iBlue. Says it works really well tool

See you on the roads (without my old clumsy Melway).
