Sony Corporation is reportedly considering (again) a hybrid tool combining the features of the popular PSP (PlayStation portable) game console with the functionality of the Sony Ericsson mobile phone to have a better hand in competing Apple’s leading and very popular iPod and iPhone. The PlayStation phone will be developed by a new project team that was supposedly organized and assembled this month.
We all know that Sony is a pioneer in electronics and a conglomerate in the entertainment field for launching the “WalkMan”. It dominated the portable music player market since it was launched thirty or so years ago. However, it has been running behind, far behind, the iPod and iPhone in recent years.
To take advantage of the popularity of the Apple iPod and iPhone line of products, a growing number of game developers including CAPCOM Co. Ltd. and Square Enix Holdings are now offering software for the iPod and iPhone products. This is definitely poses a threat to Sony’s PSP and Nintendo Co. Ltd’s DS.
If the plans pushed through, and if the project team that was set up this month, we might be able to finally see the arrival of the Sony Ericsson “PlayStation Phone”. The rumor that have come and gone for more than two years now, will ultimately subside if not eradicated with this advent.
When will it be released? A very good question. Only time will tell for now. One thing is for sure, this will definitely make other mobile companies to step up to another notch. To us consumers, how sweet it is!
