Before solid info about the specs of the new BlackBerry 9000 came out, I’ve already heard a gamut of rumours and speculations within the span of a few months. I believe I speak for the majority when I say that the specs make the handset look promising; aside from the 2-megapixel camera, of course. If you ask me to name its best feature though, I’d have to say it’s the 3G connection with tri-band HSDPA support. But wait, what’s this? It seems BlackBerry’s stripped that spec altogether from a couple of its devices.
To be able to extend the BlackBerry 9000’s customer range to the, uh, more financially-challenged, RIM is developing TWO 3G-less versions of the smartphone. The two devices with the codenames Javelin and Niagara share the same looks, differing only in their specifications.
BlackBerry 9000 “Niagara†info:
- “Large screen family”
- QWERTY keyboard
- 480×360 LCD
- EV-DO Rev. A
- aGPS
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- 4.7 OS platform
- BES 5.0 support (HTML email, etc)
- Qualcomm MSM7600 processor
BlackBerry 9000 “Javelin†info:
- QWERTY keyboard
- 480×360 LCD
- Quad-band GSM/EDGE
- GPS
- Wi-Fi
- 3.2 megapixel camera
- 4.6 OS platform
- BES 5.0 support as well
- ArgonV processor
The Niagara seems to be the more advanced between the two, boasting assisted GPS, a higher platform and processor specs, and EV-DO Rev. A connection (which I suppose would do if 3G isn’t involved). One funny thing I’d like to point out is that RIM placed higher camera specs on these supposedly more affordable versions of the BlackBerry 9000 than its 3G version. Niagara would reportedly be released by Verizon on May of 2009. Hold on, is that a year from now? Those waiting for the 3G BlackBerry 9000 could only hope it’ll be released prior to that, or else who knows how long you’d have to wait.

The Boy Genius Report has blogged on most of the specifications of the new Blackberry 9000. So far the only slightly disappointing feature is the 2MegaPixel Camera. RAM, ROM, CPU and bluetooth specs are still to be confirmed.
