Life just got a lot easier for Vodafone Australia prepaid users. Mobile prepaid recharge is now possible directly online through PayPal, as long as you have an account with the online payment portal. If you’re only just registering a new PayPal account, you have to verify it first to be able to use it with the Vodafone live! mobile content portal.

All you need to do is pay through PayPal and then you will automatically receive a text message or email, depending on your choice, which contains a PIN number. The PIN number would be needed to redeem the purchased credits through calling the number 1555, free of charge. According to source, Vodafone Australia is the second in the world to have such a service after Vodafone first introduced it to Italy sometime ago.

As we’ve mentioned before, the squishy widget-gadget Chumby is now available in Australia through Internode. Unfortunately, as we’ve also mentioned before, all of the widgets that can be used on the Chumby are US-centric and the lack of widgets made specifically for Australia might hamper the gadget’s success in the country.

As a part of the solution to the problem, Internode has launched a Chumby widget development competition that calls for Australia-centric widget entries from everyone, even those who don’t have Chumby units. There will be two winners: a grand prize that will be decided by vote and a runner-up chosen by Simon Hackett, Managing Director of Internode. Both winners will get their own Chumby; the grand prize winner also gets a copy of Adobe Flash CS4 Professional and $800 internode credits while the runner up gets $200 Internode credit.

In the United States, Friday of this week means Black Friday that marks the Friday after Thanksgiving which is seen as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Black Friday also means gadget discounts and this year, Apple is extending its sale to Australia.

Apple’s Australian online store has put up information and more importantly, the prices (and the discounts) available for this Friday only. The slash in prices isn’t anything significant, but for those looking to buy new Apple gadgetry anyway, it’s a great way to save some that you can spend on something else later. The sale includes the new MacBook that’s AU$161 less than original. Other models like the iMac and iPod Nano, Classic, and Touch are also on sale.

If you remember, Chumby is that soft-bodied widget-driven device with a touch screen panel that could be used to check the weather and listen to Internet radio among many other functions.

Chumby is arriving in Oz via ISP Internode and will probably not be available in any retailers, at least not yet. Even if you’re not using Internode as an ISP though, you can still grab the Linux-based Chumby for $299 and dress it up (by changing the leather, I presume) by picking up outfits from Internode for $39 per. A valid concern would be that majority of widgets for the Chumby is US-centric, but Internode is hoping that the device can bring out the widget-making ninja in every tech-loving Australian and fill the gaping hole.

First, Sensis kills off its search engine completely and would, from now on, integrate Google’s search engine for the web site. Thankfully, there will be no layoffs as a result from the integration, but it would slash costs on Sensis’ part.

Second, Sensis will be integrating its Yellow Pages business listings into Google Maps Australia. That means if businesses advertise on any of Sensis’ services (Yellow Directory, Yellow Online, Yellow Mobile or telephone service 1234), they will now be listed on Google’s search engine and Google distribution. While Sensis’ owned Whereis.com compete with Google Maps though, it will not be axed and will continue to run as it is right now.

Optus has had to deal with a lot of beef from customers and the media over alleged outages not only for its 3G network, but also for its phone and internet services. August apparently saw numerous complaints about 3G network interruption in a few of the country’s locations.

In fact, based on Wired’s survey, Optus seems to be the slowest 3G connection for the iPhone 3G in the world. Optus also received flak for reducing data allowance per plan. If you’re one of those who have been affected (in any of the mishaps that happened relating to Optus), then the Optus managing director of products and delivery wants you to know that “It’s quite normal.”

According to him, “There have been a few incidents — which is actually quite normal for any operator and any vendor — that the new software loads under some conditions or locations don’t behave the way you expect them to, despite having done very extensive testing before you bring them into the network.”

Local electronics manufacturer Kogan, announced plans to make a Google Android-based phone to be distributed in the country. The small online-based company orders its products straight from manufacturers in China, which are made to its specifications and cater to its needs.

Kogan’s Google Android phone “would look similar to the iPhone” with a touch screen panel, Bluetooth, GPS, trackball, WiFi, and NO built-in keyboard. It will be available in the country on December 15 and will be sold for $199 per. Since none of the major manufacturers have mentioned plans to release Google Android phones in Australia, Kogan’s MIGHT be the first Android-based phone to hit the country.

“We’ve got a few designs that we can easily choose from. We know the components that’s going to go into the phone…It’s a matter of loading the Android system on to the phone, configuring it, making sure it works very well and then the manufacturing of the few thousands phones that we need to launch it is just a matter of a day or two,” says Ruslan Kogan, company owner.
