A few days ago, I posted my quick review on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. In short, it’s a superb phone (in my opinion 2011′s best) however one of its major downsides is its battery life. Thankfully there has been an improvement in battery time when compared with the Samsung Galaxy S 2 out of the box, yet when using it with my normal operational style, I found the battery only lasted till around 1pm (fully charged at 7am). This is totally unacceptable in this day and age of what are supposed to be power-efficient dual core processors and higher capacity lithium ion batteries!

The last few weeks just may have been this year’s most significant when it comes to smartphone announcements. Earlier this month, after much anticipation, Apple fans were finally handed news of the next generation iPhone which turned out to be a smaller change than what all expected but should have known – the iPhone 4S is basically the iPhone 4 running iOS 5, Siri and slight boosts in hardware. In the Android world, two flagship smartphones were announced which had Android lovers waiting with bated breath; these of course were the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the child of the newish Google and Motorola marriage, the Motorola RAZR.

Only hours ago did Samsung and Google jointly announce the release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone which runs Google’s latest version of Android (version 4.0) also fondly codenamed “Ice Cream Sandwich”.

As we forecasted earlier in the year, the Samsung Galaxy S II is a winner and the latest sales figures released by Samsung support this – 3 million Samsung Galaxy S II handsets sold in only 55 days! According to PCMag.com, it is 30 days ahead of it’s predecessor, the Galaxy S, which took around 90 days to achieve this!

LG’s (Android) Optimus Black… I’ve been wondering just where it fits. It’s not the gun performer. That’s the 2X’s claim. It’s not bleeding edge entertainment. I guess that’s where the new Optimus 3D smartphone stakes its claim. But the Black is very cool, in its own right and I think it fits in nicely as the stylish all-rounder with mega-brightness for outdoor use. And now LG seem to be confirming my suspicions on the whole “positioning” thing with the announcement a few days ago of a partnership with the Keith Haring Foundation to bring a handful of his iconic cool artworks to the Black’s back.

Is the LG Optimus 2X as fast as everyone is reporting it to be? To put it bluntly, the answer is an emphatic heck yeah!

Below is a short vid that I made while I was checking out the blazingly fast LG Optimus 2X today (first day of CES2011). You’ll see how having a dual core processor makes switching from app to app so fast that you can’t even see the transition animations! At the end of the video I also include a demonstration of HDMI mirroring with the LG Optimus 2X which basically turns the smartphone into a console.

Loved how LG used one of my favorite racing games on their demonstration at the LG CES2011 Booth too : Need for Speed, Drift!

Here’s a video showing some of the enhancements included in the next major update (after Gingerbread) to the Android Mobile OS which will be Google Android 3.0 or otherwise codenamed “Honeycomb”. Honeycomb is being built especially with tablets in mind and has not been officially released yet. This seems to be the reason why many manufacturers held off releasing their tablets at CES 2011.
