After all the rumors preceding its announcement, the official unveiling of the 3G iPhone at WWDC was a bit anti-climactic. In fact, the mock-ups which circulated the web were actually quite well-done that what I saw wasn’t really anything new.

After the long, painful, and grueling wait, the 3G Apple iPhone has allegedly arrived in Australian shores. The proof? A nice piece of, errr, box. But it’s not just ANY box—if you haven’t noticed, the Apple logo indicates that this is a very, very important good.

Apple kept baiting us with news about the 3G iPhone’s availability worldwide but kept mum about the exact release dates that it was starting to drive me batty. Good thing Gizmodo gave us a lead, at least. When the opening keynote for the iPhone SDK conference in June was announced a while ago, people guessed that the 3G iPhone would be a major announcement. Now Gizmodo is backing this theory up.

When we reported on Vodafone’s plan to release the 3G iPhone in Australia, we mentioned that CNET Australia hinted on an Optus release as well. It seems that bit is actually true. Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. just announced its plans to release the iPhone in Australia, India, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Breaking News: Thanks to Engadget, we actually know for sure that Vodafone will be releasing the 3G iPhone in Australia. Still unsure if this is an exclusive arrangement as CNet.com.au mentioned something about Optus selling iPhones also.
May 06, 2008: Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.

Famous American technology journalist, Walt Mossberg, has casually stated that the 3G iPhone should be available in the U.S. within the next 60 days during a Beet.TV Summit. This means July, so perhaps around August for Australia? Perhaps I bought my iMate Ultimate 8502 too soon?
