Yet another touchscreen phone from the HTC range. This time it is a sequel to the successful HTC Touch Diamond and is named the Touch Diamond2. No matter how hard HTC tries, it has never been able to attain with its models the cult status that the iphone has. The rather obvious name might be to try and repeat the success of the Touch Diamond, but I really don’t think the name matters. The way the device is put together is what really does matter. So let’s find out more about the phone and whether it is better than the Touch Diamond.

First up, the looks department. The phone looks good; it looks like a phone that a Wall Street executive would be happy to sport. It is a tad smaller but slightly thicker than the iphone at107.85 X 53.1 X 13.7 mm compared to the iphone’s 115 X 61 X 11.6 mm. The touch screen has a size of 3.2 inches which means the screen is larger than the 2.8 incher in Touch Diamond(1). Resolution has been beefed up from 640 X 480 to 800 X 480 making the already sharp screen, even better. But we still faced difficulty reading the screen in sunlight, a problem present in the Diamond. The screen of the Diamond has been a finerprint magnet and the Diamond2 is no better. Now why the name Diamond? Beacause the battery cover of the Touch Diamond has lines and facets reminiscent of,well,a diamond. But this trademark design is absent in the Diamond2, which is good and bad. Good because it helps it stay evenly on a surface,and bad because it looks bland. Another issue that stays sorely in all HTC phones is the lack of quality of the casing. A better quality plastic could have been used for the cover.

But there’s also a small, magnetic cradle on the underside of the tail portion that folds in, to hold the mouse’s thumbnail-size USB receiver. When the mouse is collapsed, the tail portion secures the receiver, ensuring that you’ll have all of the necessary pieces together when you take the mouse out of your bag.

The core “mousing” functionality works as you’d expect it to. I personally like the fact that setting up the Arc Mouse is so simple. After you insert the three, Microsoft-provided AAA batteries, you plug in the USB receiver, wait for Windows to recognize the mouse, and reboot. Mac setup is even easier, as Mac OS X found the mouse as soon as we plugged the receiver in. For its intended purpose as a travel-friendly input device, the Arc Mouse does exactly what it’s supposed to.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Razer gaming mice but I personally wouldn’t upgrade my corded Razer Copperhead for a wireless mouse.
