Last week, I took my Canon 5D M2 with my wife’s Canon 50mm f1.4 lens to a work celebration function – I forgot how much I love using a 50mm! The lack of zoom and prime functionality makes you think a little bit more about your photography, especially composition. After the posting the photos online, I had a couple of queries about the lens and camera that I used. As a result, one of my work colleagues purchased a 50mm.

See I told you I’m not just a Canon fanboy! Even though I’ve used Canon for most of my life and normally avoid talking to Nikon users (kidding), I’m very impressed with what Nikon have produced with their newest full-frame camera, the Nikon D800.

Nikon comes out pumped up with a vengeance especially with the huge huge 36.3 megapixel capability on this camera. See the video below by @digialrev on how it performs in real life. However I must say, it’s not the prettiest filly in the stable….

Canon has just announced the new Canon EOS 5D MIII and I must say that I’m slightly disappointed.  Most of the enhancements to the Canon 5D MIII are minor, compared to when the Canon 5D MII was released. The Canon 5D M2 was the first Digital SLR with HD video recording ability – it was a game changer and generated a huge buzz on the web especially with the likes of Vince La Foret showing it off…

Good news for owners of the Ricoh GXR digital camera! Ricoh have just announced the RICOH LENS A16 lens for the GXR – it has a versatile range of 24-85mm which means that you can take sweeping landscape shots as well as zoom in close for portrait shots. The addition of the RICOH LENS A16 now means there are 6 lenses available for the Ricoh GXR.

Canon has just launched its most advanced digital still camera to date – the Canon PowerShot G1 X. I’ve watched the Powershot G Series evolve over the last 10 or so years (having personally owned a G3, G10 and now G11) so I’m excited to see this next step.

Canon’s latest blow is the announcement of its brand new top-end digital SLR for professional photographers, the Canon EOS-1D X. With jaw-dropping features such as ability to shoot autofocus at 12 fps, being powered by two of the new DiG!C 5+ image processors, ISO range up to 51200, 61 AF points, full HD movie video industry compliant recording capability and all in glorious full-frame 18.1 MP, Canon have yet again set the standard for all to follow.

Canon have recently just announced two new cameras from its PowerShot line that utilise the new and improved DiG!C (why did they spell it like this?!) 5 Image Processor: Canon PowerShot S100 and Canon PowerShot SX40 HS. The improvements lie in better handling of white balance and noise which means that users will be able to take even better pictures especially in lowlight conditions.

When I started Mr.Gadget almost 8 years ago, a lot of the laptops didn’t have webcams built in. Therefore as online video services and websites like Skype and Youtube grew so did the demand to get a USB webcam. However over the years we’ve seen manufacturers respond to this need and given what’s normally very little room, installed basic webcam hardware and functionality on laptops. With only a few millimetres of depth to work with, manufacturers will always face a huge challenge. For those who know anything about cameras, you’ll know that to deliver anything close to decent quality with even a sniff of depth of field and ability to capture proper images in low light, they’re going to need more space than that. Until miniaturised camera optics technology catches up you’ll never be able to get an inbuilt web camera that is as good as a dedicated webcam device.
