Last Friday, I was invited to attend Porsche Design’s exclusive event to launch their joint project with Blackberry, the P’9983 at their Hong Kong Central Store. The place was buzzing especially with the open bar and DJ cranking out the tunes. Oh and everyone was mostly dressed in black – it felt and looked like a very chic Porsche Design event!
As with most Porsche Design products, the P’9983 is a beautiful device to behold. At 140grams and with a 3.1″ screen, it’s very compact. Other things that the Porsche Design Blackberry P’9983 has going for it are the 64GB on board storage (with microSD expansion slot) and 2100mAh battery, which equates to approximately 14 hours of talk time.
In terms of price, the Porsche Design Blackberry P’9983 will set you back $2300 USD. That’s a lot of money to pay for a smartphone! EXPENSIVE.
I personally don’t think it’s worth that much given the fact that many of the smartphone companies have stepped it up design/style and material wise in the last 2-3 years. Take for example the iPhone 6 with its full front display made of sapphire glass whereas only the rear camera on the P’9983 is covered in this premium glass.
This gadget is definitely aimed at those with too much money to spend!
End of the Physical Keyboard Era
I really do believe it’s the end of the physical keyboard era – I used to love smartphones with actual keyboards but after the iPhone 3G and iOS keyboard, I don’t think I can go back easily. With the advent of apps like Swype and Fleksy, I can type faster than ever before!
Porsche Design Partner with Samsung, Huawei or Xiaomi!
As much as I love how hard RIM Blackberry are fighting to stay in the smartphone game, I’d think it’d also be wise for Porsche Design to try to collaborate with some other smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei or Xiaomi.
