A few weeks ago, Samsonite Australia sent me one of the new Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Totes for review. Thank you so much Samsonite! I was super excited because I absolutely love using the non-wheeled version of this bag, the Samsonite Savio II Leather Briefcase which I’ve also just recently reviewed. How is the Samsonite Savio II Leather Roller Tote? In short, it is simply the best leather rolling tote on the market. I have not seen or heard of anything that even comes close and I’m happy for anyone out there to point me to a leather bag made with similar superior craftsmanship, looks as good as the Savio II Leather Roller Tote and as functional. Below, I’ve included a few photos I took of the Savio II Leather Rolling Tote and descriptions of why it is such an outstanding case that every traveling professional should consider.
It’s a Stunner
The very first thing that you notice about the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote is its svelte look due its flawless glossy black split leather its made from. It’s definitely an eye catcher. On first glance though, it’s also possible that many will assume that the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote is a heavy bag due to its full leather composition. But for what it is, it is actually quite light (3.7kg). When it arrived at my apartment, and I lifted the package to test what it was, I didn’t think it was the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote – I was very surprised when I opened the package to find it in there!
Even though it’s made out of the thinner and refined split leather, the bag feels quite tough. The Savio II Leather Rolling Tote can easily withstand being hauled around train stations and will have no problems in the office environment. Heck, I’ve even run with the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote in tow a few times from the train station to the office gym (around 1km uphill street terrain). I’ve had it for around a month and to date, it still looks brand new.
At the moment, there is no other rolling tote that comes close to looking as good as the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote.
And of course the major difference between the Savio II Leather Rolling Tote and the Savio II Leather Briefcase, is the rugged quality-built metal telescopic handle. The handle makes carrying a laptop (up to 16″), its power adapter, wireless mouse (I’m currently using a Logitech AnywhereMX), iPhone charger and possibly an iPad, an effortless exercise. I’ve still got a bit of a bung shoulder from an old basketball injury, so this is another reason why I love using the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote. Quality Zips and Threading This is an expensive case and there’s good reason for it – EVERY single zip, thread and piece of leather on the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote is top notch.
On a premium roller tote like this, one would be right to expect that the wheels on this bag would be rugged and provide a smooth ride – and that’s exactly what you get. The wheels are made from solid strong rubber that on most office floors is almost silent. The precise fit of the rollers and surrounding tough bracket plastic also help absorb some of the shock that cause the clanky rolling sound found on inferior plastic-wheeled roller totes.
TSA Compliant and Secures Your Laptop
Not only does the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote feature an easy to use 3 digit combo lock (yay no more keys!), the lock is TSA compliant so you won’t get hassled (at least for this case) by those narky immigration officers at LAX.
Made for Flying!
Samsonite have designed the Savio II Leather Rolling Tote to fit perfectly in airplane overhead lockers. Its dimensions are 44 x 23 x 39cm. I’ve taken it on a few flights with Cathay Pacific Airways and had no problems closing the airplane locker door or wheeling it down the aisles. Global travelers will also appreciate the Global 3 year warranty!
4 Convenient Sections to Organise Your Gadgets
As a frequent traveler and IT professional, I like to have organised so I can access them quickly, whether that be my passport to present to Immigration, charger to charge up my iPhone 5 or my laptop to make a presentation – I absolutely loathe having to scrounge around a bag to find something I need quick. Even worse, pulling everything out, then throwing everything haphazardly back in. No, no, no. The Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote has four main purposeful sections to help keep you and your gadgets organised and avoid more stress on the road or in the skies.
In the next part I’ll describe these sections and how I personally like to use them. You may use them in a totally different way, but what I’m about to share works really well for me with my daily work flow. Section #1 – For Travel documents or chewing gum On the very front there are two pockets where I tend to keep things like my passport, e-ticket and boarding passes. These are the pockets where I store things that I need to frequently reach for possibly in the dark and without looking.
Section #2 : Stationary, Charging Cables, Keys and Business Cards In section #2, there’s a place to stash business cards, stationary, currency, a handy key holder and of course a meshed-zip pocket for charge cables and ear phones.
Section #3: The Laptop & iPad Pockets
In section #3 of the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote, there’s a specific section designed to hold your laptop (up to 16″). Just outside this is a convenient iPad pocket – I’ve used this to carry my iPad Mini a few times now. Other gadgets I house in this section are my mouse and laptop power adapter.
Section #4: Documents, Underwear and Miscellaneous Gadgets
That’s not my magazine in the bag, just something I found at the Shangri La I was staying in! Normally in this section I store any documents I’m working on or need quick access to, sometimes an extra pair of socks and gadgets that I’m supposed to be reviewing Lately I’ve been thinking of packing a cardigan or light long sleeve top when it gets freezing on the plane!
Things I like about the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote:
- Luxurious glossy black leather
- Quality strong stylish stitching
- 4 main compartment areas
- Abundance of pockets
- Dedicated iPad pocket next to laptop for easy retrieval
- Sturdy solid rubber wheels
- Rugged plastic around the wheels to protect surrounding leather against ground bumps
- Quality telescopic roller handle
- Padding protection for laptops
- TSA approved 3-digit combination lock for those of us who hate carrying keys
- Lightweight design considering the use of leather as opposed to lighter fabric covers
- Big strong quality zippers and zips
- Unzippered easy access pocket next to handles to keep regularly accessed things like passports, eye-drops or chewing gum
What could be improved:
- Lack of rear strap to tether on top of larger luggage – biggest biggest gripe Samsonite!
- If the bag was fully packed and heavy (when it carried my MacBookPro, Lenovo X230 laptop and Canon 5D M2), the handle would almost invert and pull out the handy easy to access non zip pocket next to the handles
- No accommodation for a shoulder strap
Mr.Gadget Score: 8/10
Huge thumbs up to Samsonite for creating this masterpiece of a bag. I absolutely recommend the Samsonite Savio II Leather Rolling Tote to executives and professionals looking for a highly functional leather rolling tote. Absolutely superb bag that would have got full marks if it had a strap on the back to tether it to larger luggage pieces.
