Samsung Australia have just announced that the Samsung Galaxy Note is now available for sale in Australia. I’ve always liked the idea of a 5″+ screen as you’ll read in my review of the Dell Streak from this time last year. It’s one of those devices that can either be a hit or a miss – so far by all the reviews online and from all the Samsung Galaxy Notes I’m seeing in public, I believe it’s a hit and Aussies will love it.
Back then one of my biggest gripes with the 5″ Dell Streak was the lack of processor power to run the larger-than-normal display and apps – the Dual-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 inside the Samsung Galaxy Note more than fixes this issue. And of course there’s a slew of other noteworthy features that clearly show how much the world has progressed in the last 12 or so months. These include : 5.3″ HD Super AMOLED display, Android OS Gingerbread and slim form-factor.
Unless you are really going to do a lot of drawing on the run, I see absolutely no need for the stylus. I can already foresee many grumpy Samsung Galaxy Note owners complaining about having lost their stylus somehow. When I played with one here in Hong Kong earlier in the year, I was annoyed that the stylus on the review device didn’t actually work, even after a reboot of the device. Again, I see no need for it.
Overall the Samsung Galaxy Note, is just another Android with a larger screen which means that multimedia and social media becomes much more enjoyable to use. If you’re on your Android a lot throughout the day and don’t mind the extra width, I recommend the Samsung Galaxy Note for you.
Samsung Galaxy Note Australia Press Release
AUSTRALIA, Sydney – 14 March 2011 – Samsung Electronics Australia today announced the availability of the highly anticipated GALAXY Note. The GALAXY Note fits within its own product category, combining the on-the-go benefits of a tablet while maintaining smartphone functionality – creating an amazing user experience.
The GALAXY Note has a 5.3” HD Super AMOLED display – an expansive high-resolution screen that provides an immersive viewing experience. Taking full advantage of the large display, users will be able to view multiple pages within the one 5.3” screen with the added benefit of minimum scrolling. In addition, an advanced pen-input technology, called the S Pen, is combined with the GALAXY Note’s full touch screen, enabling users to freely capture and create ideas while on-the-go.
“The Samsung GALAXY Note represents a new category of Samsung portable devices for Australian consumers,” said Tyler McGee, Vice President of Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia. “The product combines the freedom of a paper notebook with the connectivity of Samsung’s smartphone technology and services, providing consumers with great flexibility all-round” he added.
The GALAXY Note features Samsung’s beautiful HD Super AMOLED display providing incredible clarity to help ensure a great viewing experience for video, photo, document and web**. The HD screen also offers an amazing viewing angle, allowing content to be viewed comfortably.
Despite the 5.3” display, the GALAXY Note measures just 9.65mm in thickness allowing it to fit snugly in almost any pocket or handbag to offer true portability.
Specially Designed Applications**
Specific to the GALAXY Note, Samsung also introduces ‘S Choice’ – a new category menu under Samsung Apps, with applications specially designed for the GALAXY Note S Pen. New applications include: Soonr Workplace, OmniSketch, Zen Brush, ComicBook!, and iAnnotate PDF. Soonr Workplace enables team collaboration by allowing direct annotation on the various file formats stored in the Soonr Cloud and iAnnotate PDF provides a direct annotation mode for S Pen over PDF files. OmniSketch and Zen Brush are useful tools for free sketch and drawing. OmniSketch enables users to sketch drawings using the S Pen like a brush, while Zen Brush provides oriental brush simulation.
Larger HD Screen, Great Flexibility
The high resolution display helps ensure that PowerPoint presentations, web-pages, news apps and e-books can be viewed with minimal scrolling or zooming. Minimising the need to switch between applications, the GALAXY Note’s HD Super AMOLED screen allows for meaningful split-screen operation in the most frequently used apps.
Samsung has also included S Planner, a smart professional planning tool that makes full use of the device’s HD screen. The management planner integrates the phone’s To-Do tool and schedule application, allowing simple drag and drop functionality between the two apps; control and navigation is intuitive, helping users to organise their busy lives efficiently.

a different input experience. The incorporated digital S Pen can be used for sketching and artwork, while sophisticated handwriting recognition helps users to freely capture ideas and share them with other compatible devices with minimal need to perform any additional digitisation; handwritten text is converted into digital characters.
S Memo is a multimedia application designed to record various forms of user-created content. Pictures, voice recordings, typed text, handwritten notes or drawings can be captured via a single application and converted to a ‘memo’, to be edited, annotated and shared as desired. A one-step screen-capture function also allows users to instantly capture a screen. Captured images can also be freely annotated using the S Pen before being filed or shared.***
The S Pen functionality has been deeply integrated into the GALAXY Note’s native applications to provide a rich interactive experience. Users will experience control when editing or personalising captured videos or photographs. Furthermore, users will be able to draw and send handwritten images and notes via text message, email and Samsung’s ChatON communication service.**
Broadening the opportunity to create different user experiences, the GALAXY Note S Pen Software Development Kit allows app developers to create new applications and services incorporating the pen functionality.
