This morning I noticed some tweets about the new version of Instagram being released and really didn’t think too much of it. But when I read into it a bit more, especially that there was a new “Lux” feature and “Sierra” filter I just had to download Version 2.1 to try it out. Not only were there two new features but the UI has changed too!
Lux Feature on Instagram Intensifies Light and Colour
Lux by definition (symbol: lx) is the SI unit of illuminance and luminous emittance, measuring luminous flux per unit area (ref: Wikipedia), therefore it’s logical that the new @instagram “lux” feature has something to do with enhancing lighting in photos. I found that it intensified lighting on a subject as well as shadows around giving images a more dramatic effect. Perfect for night time shots of city skylines or photos with clouds.
Sierra Filter = Meh
I’m not a huge fan of the new Sierra filter. It’s my personal opinion. I like my photos to be intense, sharp and vibrant – the new Sierra filter washes out the colors and in a way flattens an image. In circumstances I can see the artistic quality that it brings but it’s not my cup of tea.
Here are some before and after example using the new Lux feature and Sierra filters on Instagram.
Before Lux is applied
After Lux is applied (press sun-look-alike icon bottom left of screen)
Finally, Sierra Filter applied
I uploaded the middle image (with Lux) on @instagram earlier today and it’s already got 42 likes so seems people are drawn to the effect that Lux can produce.
You can find me and my photos via username “mr_gadget” on @instagram. Would love to share my photos with you too.
