Having worked in Asia for a couple of months last year has rekindled my fondness for martial arts movies. At the tail end of last year, I also had the opportunity to visit Beijing which only further increased my appreciation of Chinese culture. I guess this is why the newest movie by director, Benny Chan, “Shaolin” struck a chord with me. It took me back to the ancient places like the Forbidden City that I checked out in Beijing and helped me imagine what living conditions were like in that historical context.
I won’t spoil the movie by giving away too much but I’m sure you can figure out that the Shaolin monks do some serious ass-whooping in this film. Makes me want to get a razor, shave my head. don one of their simple monastry garments and knock out some internet bullies!
In all seriousness, I loved the cinematography which captures both the beauty and destruction of China at the time.
If you love kung fu, Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and beautiful chinese scenery, check out “Shaolin!” 8/10.
