My girlfriend’s boss went to New Zealand a month back. He thought he’d turned data roaming off, but actually he hadn’t. When he got home he got a bill from Telstra for over $800! That was mostly related to the constant polling and syncing that his iPhone was doing related to Exchange email (he uses Google Apps). Telstra have been nice and have offered to waive some of that, but that’s not the point. The point is, telco international data roaming charges suck!
What my girlfriend’s boss needed is an exciting new iPhone app from a smart bunch of guys in Israel called Onavo. I met up with their CEO last week at the Mobile World Congress, and in a busy networking lounge with no spare seats we pulled up some carpet and he showed me what Onavo does. And I was impressed!
Now I’m not supposed to say anything, coz they’re in “stealth mode”, but I think I can at least give you hints! In a nutshell, Onavo has a “magic shrinking machine” in the cloud that (very) intelligently processes different types of online data and does some nifty caching and filtering of it so that you only download the bare essentials of what you need. It has the effect, typically, of more than halving the amount of data you download to read your Exchange email on your iPhone, for example.
It’s a set-and-forget kind of app too. You set it up the first time you use it, and from then on, it just works.
Want Your Personal Beta Invitation?
That’s probably more than I should say, so no more! All that remains to be said is that I scored a handful of invites to their closed beta for some lucky Mr Gadget readers. So if you’re someone who has to travel overseas and you want to be first-in with some major savings and some serious shrinking on your international data roaming bill, leave a comment below asking for a beta invitation.
Please note: if you leave a comment below asking for an invitation, we will pass your email address onto Onavo so they can create a one-off personal invitation code for you. So no fake email or no invitation code!
