Why I Am Still Getting An iPhone 4

Next week around this time, the iPhone 4 will be available in the land down under (Australia). Despite all the ruckus around the antenna / bad reception issue, I’m still going to get one.

Why?

Because firstly the antenna issue is a result of users holding the iPhone bottom-sides when it is NOT in a case – for all the iPhones I have owned, they have always been in a case so this won’t be a problem. Secondly, I am keen to try out all new hardware features and improvements on the iPhone 4. As a reminder see below.

The antenna issue doesn’t stop me at all. Like you, I almost always use a case, and I generally don’t hold the phone while talking in it. I use a headset and leave it in my belt case. I want the features offered.

The antenna issue recently influenced my wife’s decision between waiting for the iPhone 4 or buying the HTC Desire. She wanted reliability, customisation & function over form. In particular, YouTube vids of the antenna issue killed iPhone’s chances. Other factors, such as price and features, were also considered and since the Desire already had many of the same, it came out in front.

I won’t be getting one for the same reason I haven’t previously got any other Apple product (not even iTunes), I want to do what *I* want with *my* product, not be restricted by some control-freak, nanny-state CEO’s idea of what I should want to do with it. (Oh, and no, I don’t use Windoze either, I use Linux.)

Don’t get me wrong, I think the iPhones look great, but I don’t choose based on looks – it must have functionality. I can’t say I think the spec. is all that great in comparison to other smart phones, but my Android based phone allows me to do what *I* want with it, install what *I* want to install on it.

Once Apple opens up (yeah, right) and gets rid of its total-control, we know better, DRM mindset I might consider buying something from them, but until then it’s all “Meh!”. Oh, and I haven’t managed to find this oh-so-common death grip on my Desire, that Jobbie seems sure all spmart phones suffer from, no matter how hard I try.

@Adam Fair enough. If there was any worthy competitor for the iPhone 4, the HTC Desire would be one of the top 5 – it is an excellent device with a good balance of usability plus all the best technology that smartphones currently offer. I’m sure she’s enjoying it.

@MTB I hear you. When people ask whether they should get an Apple or Android, I ask them if they like to fully customise and tweak their phone. If the answer is no, I tell them to go iPhone since it’s pretty much all there done for you. If yes, then I suggest Android for the very fact you stated : gives you freedom to tweak the UI etc a lot more.

I think the iPhone’s “all-in-one” packaged approach is both it’s differentiator and stumbling block. Appealing to the masses than the uber-geeks seems to be more profitable though.

The Antenna issue goes beyond just using a case to fix it. Putting it where it can be touched/damaged is a bad idea. There’s also a major issue with the proximity sensor which they are yet to fix. I’m planning to wait until after September 30, as I believe there’s a permanent hardware fix being developed for the antenna issue (which results in greatly reduced battery life). I’m a bit disappointed in Apple over this – the fact they are selling a case (bumper) that addresses this issue to some extent indicates they knew about the problem beforehand. And the “mistake” in the algorithm displaying the bars was downright deceptive.
