Samsung Galaxy S Awarded CNet Editor’s Choice

The just newly Australian-released Samsung Galaxy S has been awarded a coveted “Cnet Editor’s Choice”.  Although some of the negative feedback was directed at its iPhone-copycat design and plasticky feel, Cnet loved the stunning Super AMOLED display, support for DivX and FLAC and great overall online performance.

For me, the super AMOLED 4″ screen running on the Android OS is ultra appealing.

Here’s the a summary of Cnet’s review on the Samsung Galaxy S:

The Galaxy S could definitely do with a sprinkling of individuality, especially for customers looking for a viable iPhone alternative, not an iPhone look-alike. But its flaws are mostly skin deep, and once you immerse yourself in the class-leading 4-inch display you’re bound to forget any misgivings you had when you first pawed the stiff, plastic chassis. The Android system will appeal most to tech-savvy punters, who will likely appreciate the attention Samsung has given to this phone’s multimedia capabilities.

We should have a full range of Samsung Galaxy S accessories very soon, so please subscribe to our RSS or Twitter account to stay posted.

In the meantime here’s the Australian Press Release for the Samsung Galaxy S below:

SYDNEY, Australia – June 23, 2010 – Samsung Electronics Australia has announced the launch of its new Galaxy S smartphone in Australia, available exclusively through Optus from 1st July for $0 upfront on the $59 ‘yes’ Social plan*. Samsung’s Galaxy S represents the future of smartphones, inviting you to ‘Turn on a Smart Life’ through game-changing, intelligent, immersive and integrated mobile experiences. From August, Samsung’s new smartphone will be available through all major mobile phone carriers.

Featuring Samsung’s dazzlingly bright four inch Super AMOLED screen and a 1 GHz application processor, the Android powered Samsung Galaxy S is designed to help Australians turn on their smart life through best-in class services and technologies. Samsung’s super-fast TouchWiz 3.0 user-interface (UI) will provide instant and easy access to applications and services and SWYPE text input allows for intuitive and fast texting and emailing. In addition, Samsung’s Social Hub service will facilitate constant, easy and integrated personal calendar, contacts and social networking, across sites including Facebook and Twitter. The Samsung Galaxy S eReading feature provides access to millions of content sources at your fingertips, including books, magazines and newspapers on the move. Finally, more than 50,000 applications from the Android Market will allow you to extend the benefits and functionality of Samsung’s new smartphone.

“We’re excited to be bringing the Galaxy S, our most innovative and advanced smartphone to date, first-to-market with Optus,” said Tyler McGee, Vice President, Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia. “We are committed to offering our customers choice by providing the broadest range of handsets in Australia to suit every lifestyle. Our new Galaxy S smartphone offers the very best of tomorrow’s smartphone technology and experiences today and makes it easier than ever for Australians to connect with each other.”

“Optus is delighted to be the exclusive launch partner for the Samsung Galaxy S. This new Samsung Galaxy S is awesome! A feature rich and data-centric device like this one needs a mobile provider which has the network and plans which can provide an exceptional customer experience. The Optus network is the perfect showcase for this device and our plans also provide customers with exceptional value,” said Austin R. Bryan, Marketing Director, Optus Consumer.

“The Samsung Galaxy S is a handset which will have extremely broad appeal to our customer base, both in regional and metropolitan areas. We look forward to bringing Australia this innovative and exciting handset,” Mr. Bryan said.

Available for $0 upfront on the Optus’ $59 ‘yes’ Social plan, customers will enjoy unlimited Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and MySpace – as well as 1 GB of data per month. It will also be available for $0 upfront for Small Medium Business (SMB) customers on the $59 ‘Business Complete’ plan on a 24 month contract (min total cost $1,416) which includes unlimited voicemail and SMS for SMB customers^. wonder if they copied the iP 4 design ‘reception’ flaw as well :) … wife is still looking for a phone and tried an x10 at telstra yesterday…its the only phone she typed on without error but felt cheap in hand for a $1k phone… but in reading reviews the Samsung Galaxy may be worth a look… typical… Optus get first then need to wait for the big T to load with advertising (which can take ages) …

The only thing that makes me want to get the iPhone is the apps.. they are just so adorable, useful, and sleek looking :(

All that, thanks to my iPad that makes me somewhat an Apple fanboy grr

@Palah haha. What about X10 Mini or X10 Mini Pro?
@Michael Just because you have their products doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a fanboy. I know that you’re just a lover of good tech!

Haha. My friend just got his HTC Legend last week. Despite smaller screen (compared to HTC Desire / iPhone), its anodised metal casing and design make up for it! :P

I have the Samsung Galaxy S (used for over a week now). It is better than iPhone 3G & 3GS, Nokia N97, and Blackberry 9700 (my 2nd favourite phone). I know because I have owned/own all these phones.

One word of caution, the phone can get a bit hot!

Some things lacking however (due to the phone’s OS being Android 2.1) is it currently doesn’t support:
1) Bluetooth headset calling, and
2) Certain languages not supported (e.g. Thai), which means the Thai characters appear as squares on websites. Ironic given that it is a smart phone with heavy emphasis on the Internet and socialising.

However, Samsung has planned to provide OS update to Android 2.2 in near future (within 3 months??) which is supposed to address these deficiencies.

@lipka Thanks so much for your feedback regarding the Samsung Galaxy S. Yeah I heard that Froyo is not too far away :) You may want to consider getting a decent case for your device if you’re experiencing that kind of heat. Are you using it that much?!

I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S through Optus 3 weeks ago. The phone is overrated. I’ve written about my experience with the phone on my blog at http://sfellowes.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!66B895384B2CC7AF!816.entry
