Kogan Launches Australia’s Cheapest PVR

To be quite honest, I don’t watch much TV so I haven’t really got into the whole world of personal video recorders. However, after Melbourne-based Kogan announced their latest gadget which is touted as being Australia’s (AU $99), I may just have a closer look.

I’ve got respect for Ruslan (founder of ) who has been busily listening to the consumers and trying to develop quality electronic devices and sell for more reasonable prices than the big names. We’ve seen this strategy successfully employed with their TV and digital photo frame ranges.

MELBOURNE, Australia, 11th February 2009 – Kogan Technologies is enabling the digital revolution by providing Australians with the available in the country.

The Kogan HD Digital Set-Top Box with PVR is available today for only $99 from www.kogan.com.au and will ship to customers on March 10th.

It features a digital HD tuner, HDMI output, and a USB port supporting flash drives and portable hard disks up to 1TB. The USB connectivity allows you to pause and rewind live TV, as well as record HD content, and playback a variety of media including photos, audio, and video content.

Ruslan Kogan, founder and CEO of Kogan Technologies, said the Kogan will help the digital television transition in Australia, as well as empower users with flexible recording and playback functionality.

“This is yet another example of Kogan Technologies leading the way in driving down prices for technology in Australia.

“There are no other personal video recorders in Australia that come anywhere near this in price. The real beauty of the is that you can use any existing USB storage you already have to store your favourite TV shows.

“You’ll also be able to record content to USB storage, take it out of the Kogan PVR, and watch it back on any computer, any other Kogan PVR in the house, or even at a mate’s place.

“We’ve been talking with customers about our PVR since last year on our blog, and have used our conversations to tailor the right product at a perfect price point.”

The digital switchover commences on June 30th this year, and the Kogan PVR facilitates this change by providing a value for money set top box while also giving you the power to pause, rewind, record, and play a variety of media, including free-to-air HD content.

The price is nice, but does it come with a HDD?

One has to think of the average consumer, are they going to know what type of HDD to get IDE, SATA? What size etc..

Regardless $100 is a great price for a HD tuner that has recording capabilities… this is a winner!

No Dane it doesn’t come with a HDD which I think makes it so cheap. But you can plug in a 1TerraByte HDD in! :)

Note: This PVR can only video playback what it records. So rmvb, avi, mpg files from your (clearly 100% legal) movie collection CANNOT be played on the Kogan PVR.

Given this restraint, the Tivx 2230 which also sold for $99 at Xmas might be a better buy for some. Some problems with the Tivx is that it does not decode H264 (future TV transmissions?) and can only record to an internal 2.5 inch harddrive (not included for $120). But the ability to play other videos off the unit is a huge functionality advantage over the Kogan.

The Kogan PVR is very cheap quality and does not compare well at all with my first PVR which is now over five years old. Over five years ago, Topfield had a programing in place that allowed its unit to be very user friendly and diverse in its functionality. Kogan attempt at supplying a PVR is amateurish at best – and a complete waste of money if you’re realistic about what you expect from current technology.
It has no streamlined logic in how it interacts with its menu options and seems to have no flexibility in its operation.
It actually hold, the Kogan PVR is very cheap and feels as though it wouldn’t last more than two years. It’s lightweight and not assembled with much care. The remote also has a cheap feel to it and can be unresponsive. Completely lacking the tactile comfort that many quality products not only aim for, but achieve.
The PVR’s design is flawed and if set up how it’s designed, looks ugly beside your TV. Very dumb indeed.
At the very least, the menu options need to be rewritten to allow a logic and flow that should be intuitive for the user.
I would like to return mine for a full refund, but it isn’t worth the postage fee. I would recommend avoiding this PVR like the G grade movies that it won’t let me watch.
