I’ve had the Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus External Hard Drive for a couple of days now and I’ll admit that I was surprised that a gadget of this quality is available from Hitachi – a name previously not entirely synonymous with external drive technology. However after testing it out, I must say that Hitachi, in my eyes, is now a name to look out for in this field.

More Than Just An External Hard Drive
The Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus External Hard Drive is different to anything I’ve seen – through countless hours of customer research and feedback, they’ve designed a device that improves the backup process practically instead of just increasing the capacity, design and price of the the drive.
Here are the things that I saw set the Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus External Hard Drive apart from the rest:
- Unique cradle design featuring 4GB USB stick to contain your most regularly used files
- Automatic organisation and easy sharing of files
- Overall ease-of-use
- 3D File Browsing
My MacBookPro Loves The Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus
The moment I plugged in the Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus External Hard Drive into my Apple MacBookPro it, within seconds, presented a prompt asking me if I wanted to use the Hitachi as my TimeMachine / Backup drive from now on. Perfect – that’s exactly what I wanted it to do! (I didn’t test on Windows device so will be interested to hear if it was the same seamless experience).
Seamless Organisation of Files in One Location
My life is pretty hectic at the moment, so any second that I can spare is ultra-valuable. This is why I appreciate Hitachi’s backup software – it automatically pulls together all my files, whether they be photos, videos, music or documents and it puts it all in ONE location. You can even share these files with your favorite social media sites from the software e.g. Facebook, Flickr and Picasa Web Albums.
Need Files Fast? Just Grab ‘n’ Go
I’m sure many of you, like me, have a busy lifestyle. There are days when I’m in so much of a rush that I forget to either wear a belt or wear cufflinks! The Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus is designed for people just like us with the Grab ‘n’ Go functionality – it’s the first of its kind that has an integrated USB stick which allows you to sync your most used content for you to grab and run whenever you need. Fantastic idea isn’t it?!
3D File Browsing
I’ve been using Cooliris for years. For those who haven’t seen it before, it’s software that allows you to browse photos via a 3D wall. Hitachi have partnered with Cooliris to now use view files on their LifeStudio devices. Beats having to scroll continuously through scrollbars with little arrow buttons…

This is the first Hitachi device that I have reviewed and I hope it won’t be my last.
Look forward to seeing what other cool gadgets they have in store in the future!
