As some of you know, I’ve reviewed a couple of iPhone GPS apps over the last couple of months but my favourite is CoPilot.

Recently, I also reviewed the Android version and was elated with the even speedier performance I experienced, using it on the HTC Desire.

Why I Like CoPilot Live
While there are some GPS apps that come close to CoPilot Live, I personally like the layout and feel of the user interface.  CoPilot Live has the best balance of map detail, route accuracy and calculation, customisable trip status displays, location sharing and services and music integration.

I would love a “take a scenic route” option. Which calculates the most scenic route to where you want to go.

I would like to see @twitter and facebook links for businesses as I go past them so that I can easily follow up with their offerings at a later date or just talk to them about something that I saw as I was driving past.

Oh – and the reason I’d want that feature is because there’s heaps of hidden gems driving around Australia and Melbourne, and such a feature will allow you to see and discover them.

Added train/tram timetables and whether there’s congestion and warnings of delays (especially with Metro). Also updated traffic congestion & other routes to take when there’s lots of traffic on a certain route.

The feature I would most like to see in a satnav app is true live traffic updates along my route. Many GPS claim to have live traffic but I keep getting stuck in traffic when the GPS says there is none! Twitter: @Jondalar69

I agree with Jainash that the scenic route would be a good idea, however I’d like to see it highlight scenic routes as a POI kind of thing as it’s unlikely I will get a scenic route driving to a mates house!

I’d actually like to see an app be able to have a setting to block out certain roads or junctions during rush hour (or even in general). Some places I just know are busy or the traffic lights are impossible. I like to know that the sat nav would pick that up and save me from getting stuck on those roads.

I would like to see a traffic api akin to trapster. That is, motorist alerting each other to potential traffic congestion. Further to this, calculated travel times should also adjust to the level of expected traffic along the route.

I would love all gps navs to have button to report map faults at a particular location. These can then be sheduled for a more frequent update. This one thing that let’s all nav systems down. Major highways take way too long to be updated.

To be honest, I have just read the full range of features this software offers on their website, and most (all?) of the other suggestions are already available (some need a subscription). This appears to have it all, and as I have just bought a TomTom XL250 I’m a bit gutted. I’m getting a new iPhone 4 as soon as they are in stock again and wish I had waited to buy this software instead. If I don’t win this competition I will probably sell my TomTom and buy this anyway – it has way more features!

So, what I think would be good, is the ability to see the nearest Police Station, Hospital, Restaurant, Hair Salon etc – and tap on it to automatically dial the telephone number (assuming the number is available online, perhaps this could access Google local business results or something?). This would be a handsfree call of course, that would enable me to make my booking/ask for help/whatever without inturrupting my journey.

I think it would be really cool if smartphone sat nav apps came with preloaded data on past traffic conditions on certain roads at certain times. This would allow it to predict the traffic flow on roads without using the mobile data, and re-route if necessary.

Another cool thing would be if there was some sort of ‘Suprise me!’ mode. So you would first choose a category, say food, or adventure. Then you would choose how far you are willing to travel. Then it would choose a place, without displaying it on the screen, and automatically fetch data on opening hours to determine whether it’s open. Then it should navigate you there, and when you reach there, say ‘Suprise!’

So there’s 2 features, take your pick :D

I’d like to see real time traffic / congestion info including things like (Melbourne) CityLink tunnel works, closures, etc as well as accidents, travel times. All the things that could affect my trip and determine the route I take. Maybe even suggesting better routes based on realtime data not just the general shortest distance / quickest route. @BK4D

I’d like to see crowd sourcing on CoPilot like Google Navigation, so you can see in real time what the traffic is doing.

That way, you get the benefits of maps on your SD card, but the live data from other users.

I would like to see a feature where you enter the amount of fuel you just put in your tank and each time you fill up it will tell your average fuel economy. It should also be able to work out (given enough trips from enough users) which are the most economical routes. @crankydon
