Ready Broadband (www.readybroadband.com) sells a USB modem for $99 and offers prepaid plans on the Sprint network, and there are a few others, but this has not yet taken off here in the US. The first time I saw one of these offered for sale was in a truck stop - ostensibly offering prepaid access to nomadic truck drivers who don't want to be tied down to a long term contract.
