Samsung has finally joined the illustrious, bulging ranks of Flip-imitating manufacturers, announcing the HMX-U10, a 1080p-recording, 10-megapixel-shooting compact camcorder set to land in September.
Samsung announced three new camcorders, including the ultracompact HMX-U10, which is pitted directly against the popular Flip UltraHD. As you’d expect from this category of Web-savvy camcorders, the HMX-U10 emphasizes ease-of-use, with one-touch uploading to YouTube, in-camera video editing software, and USB charging. Unlike the Flip line of camcorders, it requires a separate USB cable, which is a pretty big drawback to some. Nevertheless, Samsung’s new entry outdoes the older UltraHD in several other important ways.
Features of HMX-U10 compared to Flip UltraHD:
- It records full 1920×1080 video at 30 fps (vs. the UltraHD has 1280×720 resolution)
- It snaps 10 megapixel still images (UltraHD shoots video only)
- It has 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor is significantly larger than the UltraHD has 1/4.5-inch sensor
- It uses an SD card slot to allow for storage flexibility (though there’s no built-in memory)
- It is smaller and lighter than the UltraHD.
Additionally, Samsung claims that the camera’s physical design, which angles the top portion camcorder seven degrees up, will provide for more ergonomic shooting, reducing stress on your arm. The HMX-U10 will ship in September. Sources say that the base price for the HMX-U10 camcorder is just the same as the UltraHD.
