First: if you use just about anything than crappy IE, drag&drop will have you pics added. If you want to embed videos you may be restricted to YouTube at this point, but that works.

As for being slow, well, the tutorials LOAD slow, but this is the case when you have to load a dozen of youtube embeds on any page. Get a faster computer, more bandwidth. Use Chrome or Safari. With the amount of info to be loaded, changed, updated, there is no way around, even though there will be optimizations of course, but the sheer amount data loaded and JS to be executed is restrictive. This is a pre-pre-alpha anyway.

As for new message notification. I am sure that within weeks there'll be a Vista/Seven/Google gadget/widget for desktop out that does it for you just like facebook, msn, skype...

Also, do not forget that this is a protocol, not a software. Meaning: you may see waves embedded into Facebook, blogs, even mainstream online media that uses comments soon enough. They BEG for it. After that someone does a POP3/IMAP4 client gadget for Wave and your e-mail clinet goes to the attic. Also: they just work a bit on google contacts and alread pretty powerful calendar and allow them to be included to wave (with a connection to windows device center to synchronize stuff on the gadget part) and you can forget all PIM and mail clients. You'll use the already 'applicationalized' browser.

"interactions have been kinda slow."
You got that right :D I'm sure they are going to implement an email notification system when there is a new message coming on your waves

I haven't given up on it yet. I'm just not that wrapped about devoting time that may be more effectively used elsewhere...such as my existing online social networks.

True that; never judge a book by it's cover.
First you must read the book, then make your statement, and not rely on others statements. :)

Well, it's like Twitter! I tried it in its early beginning when it was an empty lonely place and didn't find the purpose.

Once all my friends began to Twitter, it was one big party.

I have Google Wave and so do some of my friends who I happen to be collaborating in a big project. Trust me. I find Wave to be a HUGE benefit for the task at hand...
