Gizmodo gets it wrong – just iPhone 3.0 OS Screen Grabs

Jesus Diaz, from Gizmodo just posted an article where he is very sure that the above photos are taken from the upcoming iPhone 3G 2009.

He’s jumped the gun.

If you click on the UMPC referral link on the bottom of the Gizmodo page, Google translates the text from the Chinese post and reveals that the screens are in fact from an iPhone with the iPhone 3.0 on display. No where does he mention that it is from the new iPhone 3G 2009.

Visit this CNet iPhone 3.0 OS photo link, you’ll see that all these screens were posted months back. The Hong Kong poster could have just saved these onto his iPhones as images.

It is highly unlikely that some unknown Chinese blogger would be able to get their hands on an iPhone 3G 2009 before anyone else (no offence to him).

I’m a big fan of Gizmodo, so this is not an attempt to dishonor their good name at all – this is purely my personal opinion.

Wouldn’t the digital compass indicate it is not the current generation iPhone, leading to the conclusion it is new model?

Mr.Gadget Says, in 5-31-2009 at 23:09:12

Hi Long, an image of the digital compass could be fabricated quite easily. If the point of the blogger was to show it was the new iPhone 3G 2009, I’m sure he would have taken some shots of the body/case too.

i think you need to read the original article again (which seems to be impossible since it looks to be down). he takes two pictures of the dash of a car. one with his friend’s 3g, and one with the new iphone with autofocus to show the difference between the two. the 3.0 software has no compass or autofocus functionality as that’s a hardware limitation (i should know as i’m currently running the beta). he also shows a camera screen, as do you, with the ability to switch from photo to video. once again, only the new iphone will be able to shoot video. yes, most of those shots could have been from a 3g running 3.0, but the autofocus screen with the blue square, the compass, and the video capability HAVE to be running on new hardware.

I can read Chinese…and I’m sorry to tell you that..the article did metion the phone he tested was a new iPhone with auto-focus and digital compass.

And he told readers that is an engineering prototype, so the machine may not look the same as the coming iPhone 3rd Gen.

So, don’t trust Google translate all the time, I don’t think Larry and Sergey can read Chinese.

Also…some features like digital compass, auto-focus, video capturing is not available on current iPhone/iPhone 3G even with the latest iPhone OS 3.0 beta installed.

It’s true that some secret screenshots have been leaked out like those related to video recording, but NOT ALL of them. And the old leaked screenshots are not identical to the UMPCFever’s. For example, look at the upper left, their carrier is 3 not AT&T.

You may say the poster may modified the image before showing it, but, some screenshots like digital compass and auto-focus are new. None of them has been leaked before.

btw, the guy in UMPC Fever DID mention why he didn’t take the shots on the body/case. Don’t trust the translate server anymore. Look for a friend who can read Chinese (more specifically should be Cantonese, some Hong Kong bloggers use Cantonese that many people in Mainland China & Taiwan don’t understand.)

Trying to get views by insulting a gadget blog now are we? If these are just iphone firmware 3.0 on an iphone 3g. Then why is there a compass?
Last time i checked the iphone 3g doesn’t have an compass!

Kevin Edwards Says, in 6-1-2009 at 04:49:10

Not all of the pictures were posted earlier…specifically, the Compass.app. This app requires new hardware. Sure, it could be spoofed, but it’s possible it’s real.

The same is true with the auto-focus picture.

heh Says, in 6-1-2009 at 04:54:19

Except the compass image is suspect; it’s not on the Cnet site, and no iphone that we know of has compass hardware.

I’m gonna have to say that you didn’t do your research either. Look at the picture of the supposed recording app you have, and the one that the blogger had. The times, carriers, and battery levels are different.

The UMPC website says it is iPhone 3.0 OS on test hardware, eg, a prototype third-gen iPhone. It has pictures of the autofocus functionality of camera that are not on the CNET page you linked to.

You are the one who is wrong.

oh really? i wasn’t aware you could auto-focus and do video on the 3.0 OS

Editors, I propose an edit: Change the title to “Mr. Gadget gets it wrong”.

The current iPhone has neither compass nor autofocus – leaving your obvious bull in the dust. This is very likely the next iteration of iPhone we’ll be seeing very soon.

Jason Halverson Says, in 6-1-2009 at 07:39:56

It seems you’re the one jumping guns here. Further translation of the site shows that he was holding a 3rd Generation iPhone and not just iPhone 3.0 OS. In fact he even states that he couldn’t put pics of the phone online because it was a prototype and couldn’t be shown at all.

Yep seems the writer of this article is jumping the gun. You can clearly see the % battery levels in the new screenshots that show that they are not from the current 3.0 build, but are in fact more recent. And the compass app, but that’s just obvious imo.

Right or wrong, it doesn’t matter too much. At the end of the day, most news we see is speculation either from some unknown source or translated source and everyone interprets things differently or will miss things.

Needlesstosay, I’m interested in the new iPhone as it’s finally worth the money, but then again, my biggest issue is GPS and whether there will be preloaded and up-datable maps. 3G service is just too costly for what it’s worth sometimes in my opinion.

Still loving my HTC – Go GPS (mainly because I get world maps with it, not just Australia)

I’m right here :)

I believe that my initial answer is still applicable to all the comments that followed.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that.

“…this is purely my personal opinion…”
is fair enough and I agree, over the time that I have been reading Gizmodo I have known it to jump the gun only to eat humble pie, but that is the nature of the internet.
