Demonstration of Windows Phone OS aka Windows Mobile 6.5

Here’s a video of Microsoft’s answer to the iPhone OS and they’ve dubbed it “Windows Phone” – no longer Windows Mobile. If we’re still talking Windows Mobiles versions, this would have been version 6.5.

I like how they’ve fixed the Start Menu, which although previously aesthetically consistent with the PC operating system, for the small screen it was hard to select options and was sometimes confusing. The new large icon approach is much more intuitive and simpler to use.

Also like the “My Phone” functionality which backs up all your data to some off site server which allows for easily data upload / download and also re-setup of new Windows devices.

Overall, some great changes and I hope to be able to test this out more thoroughly in the upcoming months.

What are your thoughts?

I tried Windows Mobile 6.5 on my HTC Touch Cruise but CoPilot 7 didn’t work so I went back to custom Windows Mobile 6.1 firmwares.

Interface was nice though but flicking through all the menus to get to the options I wanted wasn’t as easy as TouchFlo in my opinion.

Can’t wait for HTC to release some TouchFlo updates which resemble more of their Google Android interface on the HTC Hero.

I’ve been messing with programming Win Mobile 6.5 and it’s clear MS has got a little way to go yet – this is not an iPhone killer. That said, I do like the addition of gestures and the mobile web browsing is superior (IMHO) to anything I’ve seen on the market. Also, mobile widgets are going to be HUGE! These bridge the gap between web services and our phone in a very easy to develop and deploy way. Plus they will run on both Win Mobile and Nokia phones. I expect to be downloading a lot of widgets in the near future. :-)
