One of the main reasons why I wanted a 3G phone was to tether it to my laptop for use in places without WiFi (and as back-up connection too). I’m sure a lot of people think the same. Unfortunately, tethering isn’t allowed for the iPhone 3G, but just in case you need a connection for an emergency, and you got your new iPhone 3G with you, here are the instructions on how you can do so.
The web site cre.ations.net has released a step by step procedure to tether the iPhone 3G to a laptop. The basic rundown of the whole process is as follows:
- Jailbreak your iPhone 3G
- Install 3Proxy and Terminal
- Create an ad-hoc Wi-fi network using your laptop
- Join the network with your iPhone
- Find the iPhone’s IP address
- Open Terminal and run the proxy program
- Open Safari on your iPhone and open a web page
- Configure your browser to use the proxy
I suggest you head on over to the instructions page for the details as well as the screen captures so you don’t make any fatal mistakes. Just a reminder: since tethering isn’t allowed, you might be charged an enormous amount by your provider if you use the iPhone 3G’s connection to surf using your laptop in excess, so practice moderation.
