Yep, TechCrunch is planning to build a very simple web tablet that’ll set consumers back a mere US$200. It isn’t exactly a groundbreaking design no one’s ever thought of before (there were even people commenting that they had envisaged something similar long, long ago), but if TechCrunch can make it happen, then that’ll be fantastic.
The TechCrunch tablet will run on Linux and will have low-end hardware specs including 4GB SSD and half GB of RAM. It’ll have a screen keypad and will run programs centered towards web computing such as Firefox for browser and Skype for instant messaging and VoIP. TechCrunch plans to make the design and software open source so anyone can build their own unique ideas upon it. And if you can’t exactly tweak it, well, at least you can use it. If it really does sell for $200 or under, I’m sold.
