The Open Handset Alliance has just gained more than just a few new members. Along with Sony Ericsson, the other 14 companies are AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, ASUSTek Computer Inc., Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Teleca AB, Toshiba Corporation and Vodafone.
As you might know, the members of the Open Handset Alliance will have to contribute to the further development of the Google Android platform. Some will contribute to the source code, some will help promote the Android platform by releasing products or services for it, and others will release their own Android-based handsets. Like Sony Ericsson – the company has just confirmed that a handset for the Google Android platform is currently under development. Since Sony Ericsson employs an “Open OS strategy,” handsets on Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms will continue to be released.
