Remember that time one and a half years ago when Hitachi released the very first 1TB HDD? I knew a couple of people who cried in happiness. Now that 1TB HDDs are common, what else is there to do but to up the ante? Seagate has unveiled the Barracuda 7200.11—the first 1.5 terabyte hard disk drive.
The Barracuda 7200.11 now holds the title of having the largest capacity in a single drive. The increase in storage capacity was made possible through perpendicular magnetic recording or PMR technology. The device is perfect for desktop storage (whether internal or external), desktop RAID, and workstations. The other unveiled products are the Momentus 5400.6 and Momentus 7200.4 drives with half-terabyte capacities at 5400 and 7200 rpm respectively. These were designed for notebooks, external drives, and other applications that require a storage solution with a 2.5-inch form factor.
The 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 will start shipping by August while Seagate Momentus 5400.6 and Seagate Momentus 7200.4 will be available sometime in the fourth quarter of 2008.
