SanDisk slotMusic microSD Cards Come Preloaded with DRM-Free MP3 Music

SanDisk’s new microSD card doesn’t come with an impressive, ginormous storage capacity or special functionality like Lexar’s Shoot-n-Sync. Instead, SanDisk’s “slotMusic” microSD card comes with DRM-Free MP3 Music, seriously.

The 1GB slotMusic card will have tracks from the music industry’s big four (Universal, Warner, EMI, and Sony BMG) and will be in a high-format 320 kbps bitrate. The slotMusic card can be used on any mobile phone or media player with a microSD card slot—it even comes with a USB jacket so it could be played on computers and other USB-enabled devices. Moreover, since the music is DRM-free, you can transfer the tracks to any gadget you want to. The availability and pricing of SanDisk’s slotMusic microSD card will be announced this holiday season.

So this is an alternative to buying an album on CD? I assume the cards are write-only?

It’s an interesting concept, but it seems music companies still don’t get it…..the average consumer doesn’t (usually) want 10-15 tracks by the same artist. They just want the one they heard on the radio just now. And if they have to pay $15 to get that one song, they are going to find a different way of getting it.

It also shows that flash memory is getting ludicrously cheap, if they can make these as cheaply as a music CD.
