Those attractive brushed metallic cases containing Samsung’s 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch SSDs can be within our grasps soon enough, as the small multi-level cell (MLC) based SSDs begin mass production. The 128GB and 64GB versions are first to hit the market.
These SSDs boast a 90MB/s read speed and 70MB/s write speed and consume only 0.2 watts energy in stand-by and 0.5 watts in active mode. Just a few days ago, SSDs were put under scrutiny due to the results of a study released indicating that they consume more energy than HDDs. However, the tested SSDs are early SLC-based versions which might be power-hungry computer components. MLC-based SSDs, on the other hand, consume really small amounts of energy. The Samsung 128GB SSD is expected to last 20 times longer than the expected 4-5 years lifespan of an ordinary notebook hard drive, which means it could last for the rest of your life if handled accordingly. And if 64GB and 128GB just won’t cut it for you, wait ’til the end of the year when it’s time to mass produce that Samsung 256GB SSD we saw earlier.
