At the BlackBerry Developer Conference, RIM announced a number of things including the release of developer tools for BlackBerry applications and, of course, the launch date for the Application Storefront.
The Developer Tools for Web Development used to make apps for BlackBerry smartphones will be available starting 2009. It will include plug-in for Eclipse developers as well as a BlackBerry Plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio. Bottom line is that developers could create apps using Java, XML, and JavaScript. The application storefront will launch on March 2009 but developers could already submit applications for inclusion starting December, 2008. Developers can set their own prices for their apps (RIM parterned with PayPal for app purchase) and keep a generous 80 percent of the revenue.
