Ever since I stopped playing World of Warcraft (Dec 1st) I’ve had more time to spend on this website and checking out social networking sites like Twitter (add me “mr_gadget“). It was through the latter that I was encouraged to check out the new social networking kid on the block - Plurk.
Like Twitter, its main function is to act as your online mini journal / blog where each post is limited to 140 characters. The way that Plurk differentiates itself from Twitter is the way it displays post entries; rather than list your entries in a chronological list, Plurk displays each entry as a bar on a full page timeline. Entries are sorted by most recent Plurk entries to the left which some may regard as backwards.
The more activity on Plurk (inviting friends, posting, replying to posts), the higher your Karma rating giving you access to new options and Plurk icons.
From my initial play around, there seems to be a lack of an ability to update your Plurk via SMS. Another gripe: if you’ve got a huge friends list, it’s not hard seeing your Plurk screen cluttered with updates possibly making it unreadable. Good thing you can turn off your friends and only display your own. There also seems to be grouping abilities that allow you to set up “cliques”. Perhaps you can view by clique - don’t have enough Plurk friends to test this.
I’ll keep my Plurk account, but don’t think I’ll be Plurking as much as I Twitter, however who knows what the future holds…especially if all my Twitter buddies move over!
