Ozmo Devices, a startup company backed by Intel and Belkin, is introducing its new Wi-Fi Personal Area Network (PAN) technology at Computex. Put in perspective, if some of the upcoming touch phones are dubbed as the iPhone killer, then the PAN technology could be called the Bluetooth killer.
Ozmo’s PAN technology allows any Centrino-based laptop to connect to devices embedded with Ozmo’s chip; a few possible gadgets to carry the technology in the future are headsets, speakers, keyboards, and even the iPhone. With the PAN technology, you can connect up to eight compatible devices to a Wi-Fi enabled Centrino laptop sans the need for Bluetooth technology. What’s the advantage you ask? You see, unlike Bluetooth, PAN technology can stream files without having to compress them. To music lovers, this means you can enjoy high quality music Bluetooth can never give you. Ozmo PAN-compatible devices will start shipping next year. Although it’s limited to Centrino devices for now, it’ll still be interesting to see how it’d affect Bluetooth technology overall.
