The OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner Smartphone is an open source device which is ideal for the DIY-inclined folks. To understand the extent of its being an open-source smartphone, know that this Linux-based handset ships with only a basic software which allows you to perform the most fundamental phone functions such as making/taking calls, sending/receiving text messages, and storing contacts.
The end product is totally dependent upon the user. They can write their own apps, load them, and then run them on the smartphone. It doesn’t end on the software side of things though; OpenMoko provides CAD designs which people can use to make their own custom cases. OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner‘s other capabilities include WiFi and EDGE network connectivity, Bluetooth, a-GPS, and an expandable memory card slot. You can get one unlocked starting July 4, 2008 for US$399.
