With the acquisition of Trolltech, perhaps we all were already unconsciously aware that Nokia releasing Linux-based handsets is just a matter of time. And besides, Nokia already rolled out a Linux-based tablet before. It’s just that I’m so used to Nokia systems carrying Symbian platforms that this took me by surprise.

The piece even mentioned that CFO Rick Simonson confirmed that the company is “definitely proceeding in that direction.†As promising as it seems, I still haven’t come across an official statement about this yet. In fact, Engadget mentions that a recent Reuters article discussing Nokia’s commitment to use Linux for a variety of its products without specifically pinpointing mobile phones. But then, with Nokia holding the largest share in the world’s mobile phone market, who says Linux-based Nokia phones can’t happen?
