We still have to wait a month ’til the Nokia N96 is released (on August), but a few lucky people can get their hands on a unit right now. Yes, really! The caveat: it costs US$1,200 when the retail price of the unit is expected to be just $860 (to go down over time, hopefully). But if you’re an animal lover, it might just be worth it.
Why? Because the proceeds which will be collected from the project will be given to World Wide Fund for Nature to help the red pandas of Nepal. Not everyone who donated $1,200 will be eligible to win the Nokia N96 though—there are only 96 units to be won, 95 of which in exchange for the specified price, and one for free. We don’t know whether there’s something on the unit itself that couldn’t be found on the ordinary retail units to be released soon. What we know is that the Nokia N96 limited edition will come in a numbered silk-covered decorated ash tree box and with an 8GB microSD card. If you have that much to spare and you want to help the pandas, hurry now, you can only get the unit at designated times. The next one that we know of is later this day (July 11) at 11am CET (or 7pm Australian time). By the bye, to be able to win a unit, you will be required to watch 6 video clips filmed in the likes of ancient China movies (think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), so you’d have to have a decent internet connection as well.
