It’s not like Windows Mobile users have a hard time finding apps for their handsets. After all, with around 20,000 apps floating around, several merchants are out there selling them. Microsoft’s mistake, however, is not capitalizing on these applications.
Perhaps it’s the fact that the Apple App Store proved to be profitable that Microsoft changed its tune, or perhaps it’s because new rival Google is also opening the Android Market. Whatever the reason is, it seems Microsoft is planning to launch the Microsoft Skymarket to sell applications for the Windows Mobile 7. Since the next version of the mobile platform isn’t going to be available anytime soon, it will also take a while before we actually see the app store. The plan’s existence was reportedly unearthed through a job ad that’s looking for people for “the v1 launch of an applications marketplace service for Windows Mobile 7.” As Guardian UK noted though, the Microsoft Skymarket would probably not be as closed as the Apple App Store as there are already numerous Windows Mobile app marketplaces in existence.
