The Apple iPhone SDK opens up the world to third party app developers, which could mean great things to come from ordinary app developers that we wouldn’t even hear of otherwise. Unfortunately, since iPhone 3G owners will be exposing their phones to apps developed by unknown people, they’re also risking their phone’s integrity.
Intego, a Paris-based company claims to have released the first anti-virus software for the iPhone. The Virus Barrier X5 10.5.3 was originally released for the Mac OS last week, and is said to also work for the iPhone. It can’t be installed on the iPhone directly, but rather, would scan your iPhone files when the handset is plugged into the computer. The iPhone files are first copied into the computer to be scanned. According to Sophos though, if a software has to move the files to a computer, it really isn’t scanning the device. CNET mentions that Intego isn’t really the very first to release an iPhone antivirus—McAfee has been developing one for a while, with a concept of the software leaking last May.
