While I’m admittedly not a fan, the drama that went with Grand Theft Auto IV’s release didn’t escape my notice. Fans lining up the night before the release isn’t anything new for me, but a man getting stabbed in the head while in queue? Now that’s something. Thankfully, it won’t be that particular event which people would remember the game by.
The Guinness World Record: Gamers Edition just confirmed that Grand Theft Auto IV is now recognised as the largest entertainment release of all time. It sold a whopping 3.6 million units within 24 hours, which translates to US$310 million in earnings. In comparison, the fastest selling video game of all time is Halo 3, raking in an (also) impressive US$170 million. Grand Theft Auto IV now holds the titles for the Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and the Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours.
