Back in January, the Garmin Nuvifone was brought to the geek populace’s attention as a touchscreen mobile phone with numerous functionalities. When news first came out, everybody expected the Nuvifone to be out in the market by the third quarter of 2008. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening now.
The Garmin Nuvifone was intended to be released as an unlocked handset by the company. However, it seems that some carriers are showing great interest on the handheld. We still don’t know whether the Nuvifone would be released by a single carrier or a few, but since certification and optimization for the carrier(s) are needed, the Garmin Nuvifone’s launch is delayed ’til 2009. Everyone who’s interested could only take solace on the fact that a carrier would probably lower the upfront cost of the phone, albeit on the condition of a signed contract. The Garmin Nuvifone is anticipated for its promising GPS functionality, photo geo-tagging feature, and 3.5G connection.
