When Dell’s ultra-portable was first spotted, everybody called it the Mini-Inspiron. It seems, though, that it’ll take on a simpler name—Dell E. While the product it’s particularly targeting is quite obvious (Asus Eee, anyone?), it seems the Dell E is but one of Dell’s new line of ultra-portables.
The Dell E is an 8.9-inch computer designed to be a direct competitor of the Asus Eee PC 900. The Dell E Slim, on the other hand, is larger at 12.1-inches, measuring but a mere 0.8 inch in thickness, signifying its target competitor to be (yep, you guessed it) the MacBook Air. That’s not the end of it though. Going back to Dell E, it seems there will be three versions of it available—the E Classic with the lowest specs, E Video, and E Video+ with more RAM, larger storage, webcam, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Dell E is slated for release this August, the E Slim sometime around August to September, and follow-up devices with WWAN and WiMax on October. Other known info about the new line include: the netbooks are completely stripped off of Function keys, and they have an instant-on feature called BlackTop. The Dell E starts at the retail price of US$299.
