I'm not at all upto date with the different GPS configs that are going around, but could someone tell me if the new iphone can take a "normal" gps reading when not in mobile coverage, (use satelite gps co-ordinates to direct me to/or mark my favourite fishing spots such as 18 52 54.8S, 121 36 17.5E)

If it can do that, then it would be just what I'm looking for, something that I can listen to music on through the car audio system, direct me to precise fishing spot, and then ring my mates up and brag about how big the fish is on the way home.

I'm currently using an iMate Ultimate 8502 and two of the main reasons why I purchased this was for points 1 & 2 that you highlighted i.e. Turn-by-turn GPS local app and hardware keyboard.

If Apple come out with the latter characteristic especially, I would try even harder to convince my wife that the iMate Ultimate 8502 is the perfect upgrade for her, now obsolete, XDA IIi :P

The fact that the iPhone doesn't suffer (at least not recorded empirically) the task / memory problems of Windows Mobile devices is another reason why I would betray the Microsoft camp...

Credit where credit's due, the iPhone has some very clever features. I just hate their marketing makes basic features "revolutionary" and glosses over any shortcomings.

I'd consider buying an iPhone if it had the following features:
1. GPS navigation using stored maps (like Tomtom or CoPilot, instead of download on demand;
2. A hardware keyboard, or a truly viable software keyboard;
3. Wasn't shackled to iTunes, which I detest;
4. Took decent pictures and allowed them to be sent via MMS...email is not a substitute.

3 and 4 aren't deal-breakers, but I will put up with all the shortcomings of WM6 to have 1 & 2.

Tim, agree. But that's one thing I like about Apple - they're foundation is built upon innovation and creativity.Let's not forget about the "revolutionary" UI that they introduced to the world with version 1.0 let alone the simple but effective functionality of the iPod...

If there's anyone up to the challenge, I think Steve Job's crew are quite capable of keeping up plus more.

Well, the wait is over but the hype remains...it's going to be a good device, but I can't help but wonder how Apple can keep playing catch-up in so many areas (camera quality, no keyboard, MMS or proper GPS for starters) and still call it "revolutionary" with a straight face.
