3 Australia Launches iPhone 3G Plans

No, you can’t exactly get an iPhone 3G from 3 Australia directly. They’re not yet authorized to distribute the coveted handset. However, there are ways to get unlocked iPhone 3G—either you hack it or buy an unlocked phone from Optus.

The unsubsidized unlocked phone from Optus would obviously cost a lot more than when you sign up on a contract with them. Luckily, 3 will give you back a bit of what you spend. So basically, buy an iPhone 3G from Optus, take it to 3 and they’ll give you $300 for it. The 3G SIM and the starter kit would be available by August 4, 2008. The prices are quite decent, although the data capacity only reaches 2GB, while Virgin Mobile offers up to 5GB capacity.
