At the time of writing, this has got to be the best portable keyboard on the market! Before I transitioned over to the o2 xda II, I was a Palm man. My last Palm, was a Tungsten T. Despite the fact that I could graffiti-write around 40 words per minute, I wanted a faster input mechanism particularly in lectures and workshops. So one day on one of my gadget hunts at the local Megamart, I noticed the Palm Ultrathin Keyboard in one of the glass cabinets. I asked the attendant to let me have a look at this Palm Ultrathin Keyboard and within minutes I was walking out the store with a huge grin on my face and a brand new gadget added to my gadget utility belt. At that time, it cost me $249!!

Upon opening it, I was impressed by the form factor – despite having full size keys it folded up to as small as the Tungsten it self. The metal casing was great protection in my already crowded laptop pocket. Once completely folded, no one would ever think that it’s a keyboard! Looks more like a metal wallet.

Setting up and using the Palm Ultrathin Keyboard was a breeze. I just had to install a keyboard driver and I was off and typing. There are more shortcuts on this thing, than a Ranjan’s MS Windows desktop! You basically do all the functions that you would normally do, without lifting your stylus! The Palm Ultrathin Keyboard is heavy enough to be stable while typing – that balance of weight on this thing has been well thought of. The Tungsten also sits quite securely on the keyboard so there is no easy way it will fall off, especially while writing lengthy documents.

The Palm Ultrathin Keyboard was my best friend in lectures…during my Masters of Information Systems at Melbourne Uni, the lecturers would send us all our lectures in advance in MS Powerpoint format. I just downloaded the Powerpoint presentations to my Tungsten T beforehand, then during lectures would open the relevant presentation and add comments and notes using my Palm Ultrathin Keyboard. Being able to type 60-70words per minute, meant that I could enter data in faster and far more accurately than using graffiti and the stylus. Therefore this is a great accessory for students and touch typists.

However now that I’ve moved over to the “dark side” of Pocket PC, I’m waiting to test out the o2 XDA II foldable keyboard. I’ll post up my thoughts when I finally get my hands on one of these. In the meantime, my Palm Ultrathin Keyboard is gathering dust as my wife is still learning how to use my Tungsten T! Excellent work Palm!
