I've been using the O2 XDA Stealth since early December, replacing my 2 year old HP iPAQ h6365.

The Stealth feels great in the hand, the build quality is mostly very good. The slide design works well, I'm able to open and close it one-handed and it's quite smooth. The plastic casing is a matte finish, and I've become quite fond of the (seemingly) aluminium 5 way switch, which has none of the flimsiness that some joysticks have. The revealed numeric keypad isn't quite as responsive as you'd be used to on a non-Smartphone device, but you get used to them fairly quickly.

One niggle is the USB port cover, which is a rubber mount holding a plastic cover that clips into the case to sit flush. After two days of normal (and careful) use, plugging and unplugging the USB cable when leaving my desk, the plastic cover broke off the rubber holder, so now it just has a small rubber cover over the USB port. Not a deal breaker, just a poor design choice.

The other design choice I didn't quite understand was the stylus. The stylus slots into the bottom of the device, an awkward arrangement when you need to write something. The stylus is also short, sliding out to a maximum length of around 80mm, when most PDAs ship with a stylus around 100mm.

As a phone it performs well, both as a handset and using the speakerphone, though some callers reported an echo on speakerphone. Just prior to Christmas I had a BlueAnt Talkpad Bluetooth car kit installed, and they work beautifully together, I haven't had the slightest problem. I can highly recommend the combination of the two.

O2 include some phone software that adds to normal Windows Mobile functionality. For example, with Smart Dialling I'm able to use the numeric keypad to type names, so that entering 62 will bring up a list containing some Matthews, a Maria and a Matuszewski, and I can scroll to select. 628 will only show Matthews, and so on. It also has a Block List, allowing you to block certain numbers from calling you within certain time periods.

As a PDA, it performs very quickly for the most part. All applications I've tried work very quickly with one unusual exception. When tapping the icon to select input mode (eg Keyboard, Letter Recognizer etc) it takes 5 seconds for the menu to appear. Every time, regardless of how many applications are open. I haven't yet raised this with O2 Support, but it's not listed in their FAQs, and at time of writing there were no ROM updates available.

This normally wouldn't bother me too much, except that I need to reset the device every couple of days to get Wi-Fi to work. I don't leave the wireless NIC turned on all the time to conserve battery life, and sometimes at home when I turn it on it just won't connect to my network. No matter what I try, it won't connect without a reset. After a reset, if I turn the Wi-Fi on it connects immediately. This also happens sometimes with my office network.

O2 have improved their wireless management software. A link on the Today screen opens the Wireless Manager, with buttons for toggling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Phone, and a menu for managing their settings. Another of their software additions is O2 Plus, which allows you to change Today screen settings, schedule tasks, and view/end running applications, which is quite useful.

The 2MP camera is not something I tend to use a great deal, but the photos I have taken aren't too bad for a phone. Outdoor photos are superior to indoor, even with the flash. The flash has come in very handy as a torch though. Holding down the End Call button for a couple of seconds turns the torch on, and pressing OK turns it off. It's quite bright in the darkness.

Battery life: if I leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off when I'm not using them, I can make it from Friday afternoon when I leave the office until Monday morning when I return. If I don't make many calls. And don't do much driving (meaning BT is on). The battery life isn't the greatest, but I do have the screen on max brightness, and the volume is on max.

It does have its flaws, but overall I'm very pleased with the XDA Stealth. I'll be buying a car charger for it next.
