It's a little bit bigger than its predecessors but with a whole lot more features, bells and whistles! Powered by Intel's XScale PXA270 520MHz processor and packing in 128MB ROM & 64MB RAM, the XDA Exec Pocket PC also features a tri-band phone with 3G support. It also comes with not one but two cameras. One dedicated 1.3MP still and one video camera for video calls.

The XDA Exec is unashamedly big which means it also comes with a big screen. In fact 3.6 inches measured diagonally. But it's size only comes second to its resolution of 480x640 pixels. In one word. Beautiful.

While this unit is not available in OZ, it is still a nifty little thing. Similar to the i-Mate Jasjar (manufactured in the same factory actually, it is a Phone with PDA built in.

The PDA part is terrific in that you can surf the net using the Built in Wireless, pick up emails using the wireless or GPRS. This phone will also take 3G, except I have not found a 3G provider which will sign me up without buying the phone from them.

All the standard Windows functions are available including Pocket Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Explorer and Email. Windows Mobile 5 is a little slow compared to Pocket PC 2003 but there are a few nice extra features that were not available earlier. Another problem is that compatibility for WM5 is still a little low at present, but I expect that to change rapidly.

As with all PDA's the speed and memory is always a problem, but by doing a Hard Reset and selecting Corporate mode on startup (password 0503) you can bypass most of the extra O2 software that gets preloaded.

I especially like the built in VPN and Terminal Services Client. I can log into the office and control my desktop PC without lugging an actual notebook around. There are limitations of course but for the size, the functionality of the Exec is terrific.

As far as the phone goes, reception is good and sound quality is good. The bluetooth works well and connects easily to other devices. The main problem with the phone is that it is a bit slow to react, in that it needs to turn on first, and if you have the clam shell closed (for protection) it takes a while for you to see the Caller ID.

All in all, this is a great tool for those of us who love gadgets. Full of features and advanced extras. You do need to be a bit tech-savvy to get past all the teething problems though.
