Found this interesting video as I was checking my GoogleReader feeds. This video shows how to make drinkable water using only a plastic bottle, string and a lighter. Great survival tip!

Boiling will actually activate some bacteria and you could get quite sick doing this. And boiling water in a plastic bottle?!? Please!!! The bottle would have been soft and leeching all sorts of toxins after haning it over a fire. The individual in this video would have been better off gathering up the coals from his fire, putting them in a sock and filtering the raw water through this - crude activated carbon filter.
