The question must be asked: So why Skype??

Skype - VoIP Service ProviderSo in knowing about Skype, one must ask, "why choose Skype over other VoIP options?" Good question. I'm glad you asked! I'll go over a few of the reasons and advantages of using Skype as opposed to other VoIP options.

1) Skype currently has over 50 Million users world wide, and is growing by more than 150,000 new members each day! This type of growth wouldn't be attained if the product was not worth it. As I mentioned yesterday, EBay have bought Skype for a whopping $3.5 billion, which further certifies its great worth as well as solidifying its future stability and quality of service.

2) You can download the software for free, as well as purchasing added services easily online. The ease of use is quite impressive as I found last weekend. Within 10min you are up and running! STD calls around Australia are at 2.8cents per minute making it a much more economical option than using the standard phone.

3) Not many things are free these days. Well with Skype you have instant free chat as well as video calls to other Skype users... anywhere around the world!! On top of that there are no file size transfer limits. Also just in case you can't remember you friend's Skype details, you have access to Skype's world wide directory. This is an incredibly useful and powerful tool to have at our fingertips!

4) The Software is not only easy to use, but it allows us to easily customerise the interface to suit our personal tastes. Looks are not everything... but they do play a part in overall enjoyment!

5) Of course privacy and security is important. Skype is set up so that phone numbers are not displayed; only the person's name. You can also block unwanted callers and people need to ask you for you to be added to their contacts list. Basically you have the final say. They can't get your details unless you allow them. Given the nature of the internet, these security measures are a welcome feature.

6) Wants left to say but to get on the Skype band wagon and enjoy the financial benefits and fruits of using VoIP. Recently Skype was declared the 3rd most powerful brand in the world, meaning it is without peer in VoIP space. In case you were wondering who was first and second, they were Google and EBay respectively! Not bad company!!

Of course you need a phone to utilise Skype. It's best to obtain a "Skype" certified phone to make the most of the software and options. There are few better on the market than the Spank Skype V654SK 2-Piece USB Cyberphone. Software and everything you need is included. Handsets are also an option, such as those by Sennheiser and Plantronics. So now question can be asked: who are going to 'Skype' out there in this vast, yet now amazingly accessible world we live in?!!

A phone can be convenient, but I don't want to carry everything when I travel. A USB headset with microphone can be used to obtain great clarity with Skype. Bluetooth models included. It's also possible to use built-in micro and speakers... if you don't mind a little feedback. It's ok on my Powerbook.

    A couple of downsides:
    - Skype owns the digital rights to dialogues users broadcast.
    - Skype has a moderate level of security. If you want something really secure, you need to use something like Zfone (with a compatible VIOP app.)
